SEMPLICE TRASPARENTE
DEGRADABILE OCEANO â„¢
INGREDIENTI

“The code is more what you’d call ‘guidelines’ than actual rules.”

Pirate Hector Barbossa

OUR SIMPLE S.E.A. LIFE PROMISE

At Simple Sailor Marine our mission statement is simple:  'Be the change, sea the difference, repeat.'

As we grow we aim to proudly donate to movements for change in with partners SEATREES giving their nod to our mission:

VESSELS THAT SWITCH TO SIMPLE SAILOR MARINE WILL SAVE AN AVERAGE OF 80% BY VOLUME ON PACKAGING AND STORAGE SPACE. ADDITIONAL SAVINGS OF UP TO 50% IN CLEANING CHEMICALS & TIME ARE ALSO A BENCHMARK.

SUPERYACHTS ARE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE CARBON CREDITS BY EITHER RECYCLING THE PACKAGING OR ASKING US FOR A 'METRIC MEASURE' OF WASTE REDUCTION.

WHATS IN THE BOTTLES AND BAGS?

Yacht and boat maintenance should be as simple as 1, 2, 3.  But what is boat soap, what is teak cleaner and what is black streak remover really behind the fancy labels? The simple answer is usually a mixed acid or alkali concentrate in a 1 gallon bottle of obscure chemicals that meet many land based eco standards but are questionable in direct output to the ocean. The more complex answer is an unregulated, unchecked industry of chemicals potentially causing toxic spills on a weekly basis in the 1000's of gallons per vessel over 50m in length. Chemicals classed as acute aquatic toxins according to MARPOL ANNEX V for 'wash down waste' are directed to be classed according to their IMDG code classification under UN code CAS requirements. Confused? We thought you might be so let's break it down for you:

MARPOL CONVENTION - Is not an organization and doesn't endorse or condone or enforce any rules nor does it have any definitive wording for referring to environmentally damaging washdown chemicals or considered safe chemicals for direct runoff into coastal waters or the ocean from the yacht industry.

.

IMDG CODE - Is a list of dangerous goods, known dangers, United Nations Coding and precautions for everything with a chemical name. Technically, from this list every chemical with a CAS number is toxic to ocean life to some extent.

CLEAN MARINA PROGRAM - Doesn't endorse any product but does endorse marinas who demonstrate clean practices - Many marine cleaning companies use their logo illegally to give the illusion of a clean product.

EPA Safer Choice - Endorses chemicals and products for a fee, that are known to be safe in normal use when entering municapal water treatment streams or land based filtration aquifers. They have a direct release to sea and waterways program but we currently only know of one company with endorsement (we applaud them).

  Sodium Hydroxide

  Sodium Hypochlorite

  Sodium Lauryl Sulphate

+ THE OCEAN + SEA LIFE  =  NO BUENO!!

Trade Secrets (0 PH) or (14PH) (Solution)

  Sodium Cocyl Sulphate

  Trisodium Phosphate (TSP)

We Simple Sailors' are current and former superyacht crew who understand the difference between salt water, brackish water, fresh water and the sodium elements that make up its total dissolved solids (TDS). We see the difference when the bitts are salty and when they are shiny, when the chemicals are harsh or eco but know that ECO usually doesn't mean harsh or biodegradable end to end. We know the sea is relentless, so, we set out to make a change. Maintenance is regular and repetitive but rarely do crews stop to think about the cumulative harm to the sea from conventional 'car detailing products' branded as 'ECO FRIENDLY'. After all who is to stop a car soap manufacturer re branding their product as 'Boat Soap'. It makes financial sense, as they can charge more but there are no regulatory bodies to monitor the accuracy or enforce laws, let alone fines on the many companies that do this 'GREENWASHING' resulting in unnecessary chemical pollution into our oceans and estuaries.

Between the deck of a boat and the ocean there are no aquifers or rivers or treatment plants. THIS IS WHAT WE CALL THE 'CURRENT PROBLEM'...

For perspective, not the MARPOL, IMDG code, CLEAN MARINA PROGRAM,  EPA SAFER CHOICE List, SEA CHANGE address the actual recognition and clear labelling of products that lets boaters know which marine chemical cleaning products are as minimally damaging as possible with clear labelling for better education.

Our products start with two questions:

  1. Is the product 'eco friendly', 'biodegradable', 'readily hydrolyzed in water' or 'non toxic' to sea life?

  2. Does the product function as good as if not better than the toxic equivalent?

If the answer to either of these questions is 'YES' then we commence our testing. We review toxicology reports, Safety data sheets, reactivity equations and scholarly articles first. Then we ask the chemists and biologists for their approval. Just employing a chemist or so called expert is like trusting everything a politician says is the gospel truth. We are realists and you should be too. All cleaning has some environmental impact, some side effect and some waste but our mission is to reduce in all ways, always!

After our S.E.A. criteria have been met, only then will we put our name on it:

S   Safe for the fish, coral and all marine life and on the EPA safer choice ingredients list.

E   Eco friendly by way of absorption, dissipation, hydrolyzation or biodegradation in the ocean.

A   Approved by marine biologist, chemists and professional superyacht crew

We are the proud founders of the The SEA SOCIETY - (SAVE OUR SHIPS, SAVE OUR SEAS) our commitment to be part of the change for future generations and a transparent endorsement scheme that reviews and quantifies environmental impact for better professional mariner understanding. We donate a portion of all our profits to charities for marine preservation, restoration and information.

One last thing...

WHAT IS S.E.A. & not just Sea you may be wondering. Well, she is our future, she is your legacy the next generation and she is why we do this...
