FAQs
Simple Sailor Marine is crafted by yacht professionals for yacht professionals. We create powerful, ocean safe and ocean-degradable cleaning concentrates that reduce environmental harm while cutting waste, storage, and costs. Unlike traditional cleaners full of unnecessary fillers and harsh chemicals with 'proprietary trade secrets', our formulas are scientifically tested on real superyachts, ensuring maximum cleaning power with minimal environmental impact.
Yes. Our products are formulated with truly ocean-degradable and marine-safe ingredients, unlike many cleaners mislabeled as "biodegradable" that degrade only in land-based environments. Our Sea Foam Boat Soap™ and Simple Teak™ Cleaners contain no toxic surfactants, sulfates, phosphates, or fillers, making them safe for marine life and ecosystems.
There is a myth going on that you can only use Awlwash 1.0 or 2.0 to wash your paint that is Awlgrip to keep your warranty. This is Chinese Whispers and as such their 1.0 product was not safe for the environment or paint.
Fact, Awlgrip warranty explicitly states that you can use any PH neutral soap to maintain warranty. Depending on the TDS (hardness) and PH of your water this can be between 7 & 9 on the PH scale. Our Seafoam boat soap falls at 7.5-8 depending on the quality of your water making it a safer, better alternative. It also has the same loading of Sio2 sealant as their fabled Awlcare product so you can skip a step with Sea Foam Boat soap.
Their 2.0 product is currently experience huge holdups due to its chemical makeup and import regulations along with shortage.
Neutral Ph lays somewhere between 7-9. Different Ph levels are needed to effectively clean certain marine surfaces. It is possible to create ultra low (acid Ph) products but have corrosion inhibition as much as it is possible to create ultra high (alkali Ph) products that have also corrosion or paint etching inhibition. This is what we focus on. So much so that all our products are safe around all marine surfaces. This is a metric we strive for but even more we have products in the acidic as well as caustic range that are chemically stable enough for a child to touch. This is an insane metric to achieve and we do it proudly even posting all our ingredients. Find another brand that is doing that with such clarity and we will salute you for being a caring sailor!
Yes and no. Exceeding MARPOL, REACH, EU and EPA standards for transparent, peace-of-mind superyacht compliance. These are mostly a pay to play scheme whereby the largest player on the market has a teak cleaner labeled as having no hazards with no ingredients yet has a PH of 14 and O. These are both well out of the ranges of safe.
Other brands starting with the letter 'D' and 'L' and 'T' use fake MARPOL, Clean Marinas and even non existent annexes on their labels in an attempt to lure in professional customers. The have also been known to put and post 'approved' under each of these headings which is downright misleading and illegal. We like to keep it simpler here at Simple Sailor Marine.
No "proprietary trade secrets"—just real chemicals with real LC50 and LD50 ratings.
Yes. However the term 'Biodegradable' means this:
Oxford English Dictionary - (of a substance or object) capable of beingdecomposedby bacteria or other livingorganisms.
Our products are not just biodegradable as this is generally a broad term for land based metric with no time limit, relying on ground aquifers to filter chemicals... crude oil is technically biodegradable.. We believe this is greenwashing in the marine space. So we set a new standard:
'Ocean-degradable®'. -non toxic, non bioaccumulating and degrades in the ocean with no lasting effect within 48 hours or less, ideally instantly zero effect or a positive effect.
No. Our in house chemist and third party chemists all confirmed that cleaners made with enzymes have a shelf life of <24 hours once mixed with water and are extremely heat/ oxygen sensitive. There are currently two brands on the market offering these types of products but if you look up their backgrounds or in field testing you will find neither pH or products offered offer the array and cleaning power of carefully selected, non toxic but well blended ingredients.
Of the 9 enzymes we proposed for use we were informed 6 have adverse unknown and potentially exponentially growing marine organism chain impacts that will no be known until it is too late such as speeding up red tides or green algae blooms that smother the oxygen and Co2 absorption capabilities of coastal surface waters.
Added to this the final kicker was that the dirty secret with enzymes is buzzword marketing that hides the fact they can produce anyphalyctic reactions or mutate bacteria to a stronger more resistant strain. So we decided against them for anything in spray form or intended to rinse overboard.
We use pre-measured, recyclable or biodegradable pouches & bottles that eliminate the need for bulky plastic containers carrying 90% water weight. This dramatically reduces single-use waste while optimizing storage space onboard.
Most yacht crews struggle with teak maintenance due to ineffective cleaners, improper pH balance, and inconsistent results. Simple Sailor Teak™ Cleaners are uniquely developed from 12 months of testing real super yacht decks, with a formula that:
- Removes grime without excessive pulp or darkening
- Prevents mold, mildew, and premature greying
- Contains pH buffers that maintain teak’s natural golden hue
- Works as a complete system with our Step 2 Brightener for unmatched results
No! Unlike harsh acid-based cleaners, Simple Salor Teak™ cleaners are pH-balanced to match the natural color of teak while effectively removing dirt, stains, and mildew without stripping essential oils.
Yes, our teak cleaner is safe for caulking and Awlgrip, Jotun, International, gelcoat as well as Alexseal and Awlcraft paint when used as directed.
Our formula is pH-balanced and free from harsh acids or alkaline's that could degrade caulking or damage all marine paint finishes. Unlike many conventional cleaners, it won’t cause premature breakdown, cracking, or discoloration.
No. Simple Sailor Marine has formulated Step 1 Cleaner & Step 2 Brightener to work together perfectly—no more mixing incompatible products that cause mold or greying over time. To add that little extra something something we created a liquid teak cleaner that chemically transforms to create an internal, non topical sealer that prevents mold, mildew and staining whilst also replenishing teaks natural silica content. Its really simple but expensive to do, so we did it because we actually care.
By switching to Simple Sailor Marine, superyachts can:
🌍 Reduce waste container materials by up to 90%
Double the life of your teak deck (we have one yacht at 7 years with <1mm deck erosion, we have another using conventional teak cleaners with 4mm of deck erosion. The facts are clear to sea!
💰 Lower cleaning costs by up to 30%
🌊 Help sequester tons of CO₂ per year through ocean restoration, offsetting a 100:1 for each product purchased over the lifespan of the Seatrees project.
We proudly partner with SeaTrees, supporting the restoration of blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves, kelp forests, and coral reefs—some of the most effective natural carbon sinks on Earth.
Yes! Every Simple Sailor Marine product undergoes rigorous testing on real superyachts to ensure optimal performance, longevity, and ease of use for yacht crews. We don’t believe in shortcuts—just cleaning solutions that work. We have a co-op of yacht crew who both ship, distribute and test our products with full disclosure of their safety first. It is our customers who drive our development by asking for it to be stronger or do another function, not us delivering an insanely strong product and them asking for it to be weaker.
